Newton West Oakland, CA 2021 Dr. Huey P. Newton was the co-founder of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. New Haven, Connecticut 2020 William Lanson succeeded at most everything in the 1800’s as a free Black man. He turned empty, mostly undesirable land into neighborhoods, employed free and enslaved Black people in the construction of New Haven’s early infrastructure. He spoke out for voting rights. Later in life, the white power structure determined that he had become too powerful for an African descendant. The rest were enslaved in that state until 1828. William Lanson took advantage of his free access for himself and others. He succeeded at most everything he aspired by bravely climbing out of the box that was closed to him and most formerly enslaved and freemen/women at the dawn of early America. He did it turning empty, mostly undesirable land into neighborhoods with housing for marginalized, invisible people and employing Black people in the construction of New Haven’s early infrastructure. He spoke out on behalf of those whose voices were ignored. Later in life, the white power structure determined that William Lanson’s time was up. He had become too powerful for a Black man. She played on several Negro League teams in the 1940’s and 50’s. She set her sites on the game when she was a little girl and grew into a ball player whose stats are now part of MLB. She was commissioned by the SF Giants since her first NorCal team was the San Francisco Sea Lions (even though the jersey mascot is a bear!) Mamiwata is the African Goddess of Water. She is normally adorned with jewelry, her hair flowing, exhibiting a physical presence that defies conventional standards. My Mamiwata is stripped down to her barest essence in order to battle for earth's survival.
